The four styles

What each style actually looks like once it is printed

Watercolor softens a face without losing who it is, which is why it is our default for a single close-up portrait. Oil pastel forgives a blurry smile or a photo taken mid-laugh, so it is the one we point kids-and-pets photos toward. Vintage postcard drops the fine detail in favor of a shape that still reads clearly at three inches, useful when four or five faces are packed into one group shot. Paper-cut trades brushwork for flat, graphic shapes, which hold up better than watercolor when there is a busy background behind the subject.

Questions people actually ask us

Is the Christmas card generator actually free?
Yes. The style match and the message text run in your browser and do not require an account or a card on file. If you go on to print a card with your own photo, that is a separate paid step; the generator itself costs nothing.
Does this upload my photo anywhere?
No, not for this tool. The style and message generator only asks what kind of photo you have, a close-up, a group shot, kids or pets, an outdoor scene, it never asks you to upload the file.
Where do the style recommendations come from?
From our own print runs. We tested each of the four rendering styles, watercolor, oil pastel, vintage postcard, and paper-cut, against different photo types and compared how the printed 300gsm card actually looked, not just the screen preview.
Can I change the message after it is generated?
Yes. The text box is editable, so treat the generated message as a starting draft. Swap a line, add a name, or use it exactly as written.
Why does the message change when I click Try another wording?
Each tone has two variations built in. The button cycles to the next one so you are not stuck with the first phrasing if it does not sound like you.
How is this different from a template site like Shutterfly?
Shutterfly picks from a library of photo templates. This tool generates a style match and a message and hands you a two-part starting point, not a fixed design, before you build the actual card.
Do I need to know which style I want before I start?
No. Pick Not sure yet under photo type and the tool defaults to watercolor, the style that scored best across the widest range of photos in our testing.
